Rather than pulling one sample from one bale, we randomly sample bales from throughout the entire stack. Those individual core samples are then combined into one composite, which the lab analyzes to create an average for that field.

How to Read a Forage Analysis
When you look at a hay report, a few values do most of the work. Here is what they mean in plain language:
- Crude protein. The protein content of the forage, which matters most for growing, working, and breeding horses.
- ESC plus starch. The sugar and starch fraction. This is the number your vet compares against any NSC ceiling for a horse managing insulin resistance, laminitis, or another metabolic condition.
- ADF and NDF. Acid and neutral detergent fiber, which speak to digestibility and how much fiber and gut fill the hay provides.
- RFV. Relative feed value, a single figure that puts the hay's overall quality in context against a reference standard.
