Swap when empty (no extra charge)
When the container is down to the last bales, call us. We bring a full one and take the empty back. The swap delivery is included, same as the original drop. Most customers call before 30 days are up.

You can split one container across as many types as you want.

Farmers Direct Hay and Feed is owned and run by Delmar and Trennis Ropp out of our store at 21091 NE US Hwy 27 in Williston. We grow the bulk of our hay on our own high-desert farms in Nevada and bring in select loads from Alberta, Canada. The container service grew out of our own delivery operation.

How does hay by the container work?
We load a 20-foot container with your chosen hay, deliver it to your property, and leave it there for you to use. When the container is empty, call us and we bring a full one and take the empty back. No additional delivery charge on the swap. Most customers call before 30 days are up.
How much hay fits in a container?
About 130 bales in a standard 20-foot container. The exact count can vary a little by bale size and how tight we stack, but plan on roughly 130.
What does delivery cost?
Delivery is FREE within 40 miles of our Williston store at 21091 NE US Hwy 27. Beyond 40 miles, give us a call and we will quote your address. We do not have a published rate past 40 miles because the cost depends on where you are.
What happens if I need more time before a swap?
The first 30 days of on-site storage are included. After that, storage is $25 per week. Most customers have us swap before the 30 days are up, so the extra storage charge rarely applies.

How long does a container load of 130 bales last?
It depends on how many animals you feed and which hay you choose, but as a rough guide, a busy boarding barn feeding 8 to 10 horses often goes through a container load in about a month, while a smaller 3 to 4 horse property can stretch one container across two to three months. Either way, most customers swap or refill before the first 30 free storage days are up.
Is this the same as buying a container?
No. The hay-by-the-container service means we deliver a container full of hay that stays on your property while you use it, then we swap it when empty. Do I need a permit or a special setup?
No permit is needed. The container works like a provided storage unit or trailer: we deliver it, you use it, we take it back. You will want a clear, reasonably level spot with enough room for our truck to get in and out.
How is the hay priced?
At the same per-bale prices as our standard retail hay. There is no extra markup for the container service. You pay for the hay you load; the swap delivery is included.
Is there a minimum order?
The container service comes as a full container load, about 130 bales, and the form lets you split that across whichever hay types you want. If you need less than a full container, order our regular delivery instead: there is no minimum, and we will bring even a single bale within our delivery area.
